What is Human Trafficking?
Human trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, and harboring of humans by means of force, threats, or deception for the purpose of sexual exploitation or forced labor (UNODC). In other words, human trafficking is the act of a person being abused, especially sexually, against their will and with no means of escape. The victims are held against their will because the traffickers "use violence, threats, deception, debt bondage, and other manipulative tactics to trap victims in horrific situations " (Polaris). Traffickers use fear and threats of death to keep their victims doing whatever they want. Human trafficking is very popular today because there is low risk of being caught because no one is willing to turn traffickers in and high profits because there is a huge demand in this market (NHTRC).

Why did I choose human trafficking?
I chose human trafficking because I believe that this issue needs to be stopped. One of the best ways to stop it is to raise awareness about the issue and how others can help. This is a modern day issue that a lot of people do not know about. It is not seen as important or current as poverty, hunger, and homelessness. Unfortunately, most of the time these go along with each other. Human trafficking interests me, and I wanted to learn more about it. Like many people, I never realized how big of a deal it was and how easy it was to relate to. A lot of women my age are being trafficked, and I want to raise awareness to put a stop to it because I could be one of those women.
